 ADVPR and JEM re-accredited by ACEJMC

The Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC) voted unanimously to re-accredit the undergraduate programs of the School of Advertising and Public Relations and the School of Journalism and Electronic Media for six years. Only 8 of the 19 undergraduate programs up for re-accreditation (including ADVPR and JEM) were found to be in compliance with all 9 of ACEJMC’s accrediting standards. The meeting took place in Portland, OR on April 29. The complete list of 2011 Accrediting Council decisions can be found at



 Fall receives Greek Award

Assistant Professor Lisa Fall was named “Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year” at the annual Greek Awards Banquet in April hosted by UTK’s Panhellenic Council, the Interfraternity Council and the National Panhellenic Council.


Palenchar to lead workshop, present papers

Associate Professor Michael J. Palenchar will lead a workshop entitled “Risk Communication and Unique Stakeholders: Opportunities and Constraints with Leveraging User-Generated Content” at the International Crisis and Risk Communication Conference in Orlando, FL hosted by the University of Central Florida, May 10-11. He, along with Karen Freberg (Ph.D./C&I ’11), will be presenting two papers: “Opportunities and Barriers Implementing Mobile Technologies and Social Media In Reputation Management and Crisis Communication Practices” at the 15th International Conference on Corporate Reputation, Brand, Identity and Competitiveness in New Orleans, LA, May 18-20, and “Conceptualizing Mobile Technologies and Social Media In Risk and Crisis Communication Practices” at the 2011 ICA Pre-Conference Workshop,  “Seamlessly Mobile?: Mobile Communications @ a Crossroads” in Boston, MA, May 25-29.



SIS alumna spotlighted in Delta Sky Magazine

SIS alumna Jessica Waugh (M.S./SIS ‘09) was recently featured in Delta Sky Magazine. The article, “Your Degree, Your Way,” highlights the distance learning experiences of four graduates from four different schools. The story can be viewed at

 Cortez and two students attend NMLA conference

Director and Professor Ed Cortez along with master’s students Amanda Juliette and Yvonne Socha attended the New Mexico Library Association conference in Albuquerque April 28-29 as exhibitors for the School of Information Sciences. 

 Three from SIS have paper accepted for publication

Associate Professor Bharat Mehra, Assistant Professor Kimberly Black, Assistant Professor Vandana Singh and Jenna Nolt, graduate student, have had their paper, “What is the Value of LIS Education? A Qualitative Analysis of the Perspectives of Rural Librarians in Southern and Central Appalachia,” accepted for publication by the Journal of Education for Library and Information Science.

Edwards presents research findings to Knoxville health group

Doctoral student Sheri Edwards presented a lecture based on her dissertation,

“Toward a New Dimension of the Information Use Environment: Factors that Enable and Constrain Information Seeking and Use in Hospice Care in Southern Appalachia,” at the Knoxville Area Health Science Library Consortium (KAHSLC) on April 28.
