CCI hosts 33rd annual Research Symposium

“Science Communication and Information Research” is the theme of CCI’s 33rd annual Research Symposium on Feb. 25. Bonnie Carroll, Founder and President of Information International Associates (IIa), will deliver the keynote address. Carroll will speak on “Science, Government, and Information: Finding and Communicating the Results of Research.” The symposium will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., in the college auditorium (321 Communications) and the Scripps Convergence Lab, with the poster session located in the foyer outside the auditorium.  

CCI to host Experience Diversity Banquet Feb. 25

CCI will hold its 3rd annual Experience Diversity Banquet at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 25, at the Bearden Banquet Hall, 5806 Kingston Pike, in Knoxville. The keynote speaker is Jose Aponte, internationally renowned director of the San Diego County Library in San Diego, CA. The banquet is the major annual fundraiser for CCI’s Diversity Student Leaders Society (DSLS) and CCI’s Diversity and Inclusion Program. In addition to the keynote speech, the program will include creative diversity presentations, music and dancing. Tickets to the banquet are $30 each and tables of 10 are available for $300. Palenchar receives Faculty Appreciation Week kudos

Associate Professor Michael Palenchar was selected to receive “Faculty Kudos” by the Office of the Provost for the 2011 Faculty Appreciation Week.





Two instructional technology grants awarded

Suzie Prentiss, lecturer, was awarded an Instructional Technology Consulting Faculty-First grant to support the development of Online Assessment Rubrics for use in general education courses.


John Haas, professor and director; Ken Levine, associate professor; lecturers Suzie Prentiss and Michelle Garland; and C&I doctoral student Rachel Radom were awarded an Instructional Technology Consulting Faculty-First grant to support the development of international and intercultural learning modules for public speaking and business and professional communication as part of the Ready for the World program.


Kelly and Davis have paper accepted for publication in Communication Teacher

Communication and Information doctoral student Stephanie Kelly and Justin Davis (C&I Ph.D. ’09) have had a paper accepted for publication in Communication Teacher, “Just another brick in the wall…or not? A paradigm introduction activity.”





Allard receives Faculty Appreciation Week kudos

Associate Professor Suzie Allard was selected to receive “Faculty Kudos” by the Office of the Provost for the 2011 Faculty Appreciation Week.


Mehra and Black present paper at ALISE

Dr. Bharat Mehra and Dr. Kimberly Black presented their juried paper entitled “What is the Value of LIS Education? A Qualitative Analysis of the Perspectives of Rural Librarians in the Southern and Central Appalachia” that is co-authored with Dr. Vandana Singh and Jenna Nolt (SIS graduate student) at the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE) Annual Conference: Competitiveness & Innovation, in San Diego, CA, 4-7 January, 2011. During the same conference, Dr. Bharat Mehra’s panel presentation entitled “Gender and Sexual Orientation in LIS Education: A Website Analysis of Bibliographic Course Descriptions” was delivered by Dr. Devendra Potnis, assistant professor.





WUTK still in running for mtv-U 2011 College Radio Woodie Award

WUTK 90.3-FM “The Rock” has made it to the Top 10 in the competition for the

mtv-U “2011 College Radio Woodie Award!”  To win the Woodie award as mtv-U’s “College Radio Station of 2011,” WUTK needs your VOTE!

The sixth annual MTV-U Woodie Awards will air live for the first time ever on Wednesday, March 16th, at 12 a.m. (ET/PT) on MTV, MTV2, and MTV-U from the Austin Music Hall in Austin, Texas, during the South by Southwest Music Festival. 


Harmon named TREC Scholar of the Week

Mark Harmon, associate professor of journalism and electronic media, has been chosen as this week’s Tennessee Research and Creative Exchange, Scholar of the Week.
