ACEJMC Site Visit Team Recommends ADV/PR and JEM Re-accreditation

A 5-member site visit team from the Accrediting Council for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC) found the undergraduate programs in ADV/PR and JEM to be compliant with all 9 ACEJMC accreditation standards and recommended that the program be fully re-accredited. The final decision on re-accreditation will be made at the ACEJMC Accrediting Council Meeting, April 29-30 in Portland, OR.

 

CCI Symposium explores science, risk communication research

“Science Communication and Information Research” is the theme of CCI’s 33rd annual Research Symposium on Feb. 25. Bonnie Carroll, Founder and President of Information International Associates (IIa), will deliver the keynote address. Carroll will speak on “Science, Government, and Information: Finding and Communicating the Results of Research.” The symposium will be held in the college auditorium (321 Communications) and the Scripps Convergence Lab, with the poster session located in the foyer outside the auditorium.

 

The symposium begins at 8 a.m. with a continental breakfast in the foyer, followed by research paper presentations in the auditorium on the topic of “Science and Journalism.” Another paper presentation session begins at 9:35 a.m. on the topic of “Communication in the Personal Life,” and the poster session begins at 10:35 a.m. in the foyer. A special session on the research coming out of the college’s new Risk, Health and Crisis Communication organized research unit follows at 11:30 a.m. Lunch begins at 12:30 p.m. in the Scripps Convergence Lab (402 Communications) and will feature the keynote address. The afternoon paper session on the topic of “Innovative Technologies and Their Role in Communication and Information” begins at 2:10 p.m., and the closing comments and awards ceremony are set for 3:30 p.m.

 

CCI to host Experience Diversity Banquet Feb. 25

CCI will hold its 3rd annual Experience Diversity Banquet at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 25, at the Bearden Banquet Hall, 5806 Kingston Pike, in Knoxville. The keynote speaker is Jose Aponte, internationally renowned director of the San Diego County Library in San Diego, CA. The banquet is the major annual fundraiser for CCI’s Diversity Student Leaders Society (DSLS) and CCI’s Diversity and Inclusion Program. In addition to the keynote speech, the program will include creative diversity presentations, music and dancing. Tickets to the banquet are $30 each and tables of 10 are available for $300. Graduate student awards reminder

Remember that nominations for graduate student awards (graduate teaching assistant, graduate research, and dissertation completed since March 2009) are due electronically no later than Tuesday, March 1st. We need your help in recognizing the outstanding work our graduate students do so please take the time to nominate them for these awards. Documentation on award submission is attached.

Taylor exhibit appears in textbook

“Six Message Strategies in Six Minutes,” an exhibit written by school director Ron Taylor, about generating message strategies, appears in the 2012 edition of the textbook Advertising & IMC, released this week.

Sherman takes new job

Linda Sherman, Administrative Support Assistant, is leaving the School of Information Sciences after almost 4 years of service to join the staff of the UTK Chemistry Department.  Linda has been an invaluable member of the SIS administrative team over the past 4 years.  She has developed many new skill sets during her time at SIS including event planning, scheduling, and coordinating all SIS social functions.  Linda will be greatly missed, and we wish her all the best in her new job!

 

Allard presents poster at iSchool Conference
Suzie Allard, associate professor and assistant director, had a poster presented regarding the research project, Data Curation Education in Research Centers, at the iSchool iConference in Seattle, WA on Feb 8-11.  The poster was coauthored by Carole Palmer (University of Illinois) and Mary Marlino (National Center for Atmospheric Research).  Carol Tenopir is also a co-investigator on the project.

Allard speaks at conferences in India
Allard was an invited speaker at two conferences in India Feb 14-16.

At the International Conference on Digital Libraries and Knowledge Organization 2011 held at the Management Development Institute in Gugaon, Allard presented “Building a Digital Library for the Future: DataONE.”

At the International Conference on the Convergence of Libraries, Archives and Museums 2011 held at the India International Centre in Delhi, Allard presented “Environmental Empowerment: Citizens as Contributors to Science Digital Archives.”

JOURNALISM AND ELECTRONIC MEDIA

 

Manayeva, Yuran and Fitzgerald AAPOR paper accepted

Communication and Information doctoral student Natalie Manayeva’s research paper, written with Dmitry Yuran (JEM Master’s student) and Dr. Mike Fitzgerald (UT Baker Center / Political Science) was accepted for the the American Association for Public Opinion Research Conference in Arizona this May. The title is “War of Words: Framing of the United States in Selected Belarusian newspapers in 2009”.

Heller’s “Living On” exhibit in Poland

Professor Rob Heller’s “Living On” exhibit is currently on display at the University of Bialystok in Poland. The U.S. Embassy in Warsaw participated in the opening which received widespread media coverage. TVP Bialystok television news reports on the exhibit at 5:58 in their broadcast.

 

WUTK still in running for MTV-U 2011 College Radio Woodie Award

WUTK 90.3-FM “The Rock” has made it to the Top 10 in the competition for the MTV-U “2011 College Radio Woodie Award!”  To win the Woodie award as MTV-U’s “College Radio Station of 2011,” WUTK needs your VOTE!

The sixth annual MTV-U Woodie Awards will air live for the first time ever on Wednesday, March 16th, at 12 a.m. (ET/PT) on MTV, MTV2, and MTV-U from the Austin Music Hall in Austin, Texas, during the South by Southwest Music Festival. 

 

Eskridge takes new job

Chandra Eskridge, Principal Secretary with the School of Journalism and Electronic Media, is transferring to a new position with the NIMBioS group on campus beginning Monday, February 21.  Chandra joined the College thirteen years ago as a secretary in the Department of Broadcasting. We thank her for her hard work and dedication to the department and our students. She will be missed!

CICS post doc presents research at USGS/NatureServe workshop

Miriam Davis, CICS post doc, presented findings from the CICS project, Increasing Biological Information Sources, to a workshop hosted by the USGS National Biological Information Infrastructure program and NatureServe concerning Biodiversity Information Needs and Usability.  The presentation was in Rosslyn, VA on February 8, 2011.
