White receives Fulbright Senior Specialist award
Associate Professor Candace White has received a Fulbright Senior Specialist award to work at the University of Salzburg, Austria, in May and June.  She will teach a graduate course, Intercultural and International Public Relations, and work on a research project with Dr. Benno Signitzer.  She also will speak at a meeting of the Austrian public relations professional society.

Fall publishes in International Journal of Integrated Marketing Communication
Associate professor Lisa Fall and Chuck Lubbers (University of South Dakota) recently had an article published in the International Journal of Integrated Marketing Communication: “Assessing an Expanding Niche Market: Determining How IMC Information Sources Predict Participation in Agritourism Activities among Vacation Travelers.”


McClung Public Speaking contest held
The 19th annual McClung Public Speaking contest, the Southeast’s largest public speaking contest, was held on April 27 in the Cox Auditorium of Alumni Memorial Building. The five finalists were selected from over 800 students enrolled in the basic public speaking course during the spring semester.  More than 600 spectators were treated to five outstanding performances.  

Gross helps U.S. diplomats prepare for Eastern Europe
Professor and school director Peter Gross gave a presentation on “The State of Bulgarian and Romanian Media and Their Utility to U.S. Public Diplomacy” at the U.S. Department of State’s Foreign Service Institute this week in Washington, DC. Gross provides yearly presentations for U.S. diplomats who are preparing for assignments in Eastern Europe.

25 participate in inaugural ISONN workshop

More than 25 high school journalism teachers from five states participated in the Going Online workshop on Monday, April 26, in the Scripps Convergence Lab. The workshop introduced the teachers to some of the concepts and practices of teaching online journalism that are being used in the School of Journalism and Electronic Media. This was the inaugural event for the Interscholastic Online News Network (ISONN), which is a part of the Intercollegiate Online News Network (ICONN), an organization begun at the University of Tennessee in 2008. The costs of the workshop were underwritten by Edgenics, Inc., a value-added broadband network company based in New Jersey.


Allard delivers keynote for STM Spring Conference
Associate professor Suzie Allard delivered the keynote speech, “Beyond Topical Relevance: How Scholars Choose Articles to Read,” at the STM 2010 Spring Conference of the International Association of Scientific, Technical & Medical Publishers in Cambridge, MA.  This speech premiered the results of a study conducted with CCI co-researchers Carol Tenopir (SIS professor and CICS director), Ben Bates (JEM professor, JEM), and Ken Levine (CS associate professor).
