Inside CCI – The newsletter for College of Communication and Information faculty, staff, and students.
Available online at

The newest piece of equipment in the CCI User Experience Lab (Room 230) is an eye tracker. This equipment records eye movements, including where on a web page or online image or text a person is focusing and for how long. It will have many applications for CCI faculty and student research, including web page design, effective layout or design, information system design, and effective messaging.

A team of doctoral students will be demonstrating it after the Oct. 7 faculty meeting. Please stop by to see how the eye tracker works, and talk with the user experience team about how you can incorporate eye tracking (or any of the user experience lab hardware and software) into your research.

The College of Communication and Information would like to congratulate Dr. Abdalaziz (Abdul) Aldaihani for successfully defending his dissertation. Special thanks also go out to Abdul’s dissertation committee Chair, Suzie Allard, and the other committee members, Carol Tenopir, Ken Levine, and Aly Fathy (Dept. of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science), for their hard work and commitment. The title of Abdul’s dissertation is “The Role of Computer Mediated Technologies in Scientific Collaboration in the Arab World.”

During fall break, JEM and CCI once again hosted the Institute of Newspaper Technology. More than 50 newspaper professionals from Tennessee and beyond took part in the classes in our labs and classrooms. Leading names in newspaper technology offered sessions on creating content for the web, newspaper design, photojournalism, InDesign, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, and more. The 14th Institute was a joint venture between the Tennessee Press Association, JEM, and the college. John McNair, Anne Hensley, and Deborah Douglas provided support, and Rob Heller again offered several classes.

Dr. Mark Harmon, professor of journalism and electronic media, has been selected to be a Knoxville News Sentinel community columnist.

CCI Doctoral Students Natalie Manayeva and Dzmitry Yuran have co-authored an article with former JEM Visiting Faculty Member Oleg Manaev, which was accepted for publication in Columbia University Journal of International Affairs. The article, “Ashes for the spiteful Phoenix: Foundations of Belarusian authoritarianism,” will be published in the upcoming Fall/Winter 2011 issue.
