COMMUNICATION STUDIES

Second-year doctoral students Iveta Imre, Ivanka Radovic, Betsy Dalton, and Scott Eldredge have had a paper accepted to the Conference on Political Communication jointly sponsored by the International Political Science Association and the International Association of Media and Communication Research. The paper,  “Covering health care: American newspaper editorials amid 2009’s debate of legislative reform,” will be presented by Imre in Lisbon, Portugal, November 17 and 18. 

Doctoral student Scott Eldredge will present a paper, “Health disparities and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered youth: Is stigmatization killing our kids?” at the University of Tennessee’s OUTstanding: A seminar exploring LGBTQI diversity. The seminar, the first of its kind at UT, will provide a full day of keynote addresses, presentations, workshops, networking, and exhibitors. The seminar will be held on October 22 at the Black Cultural Center and is free and open to the public. (http://www.utk.edu/tntoday/2011/10/19/outstanding-conference-lgbtiq-issues/ )

INFORMATION SCIENCES 

SIS faculty members Suzie Allard, Kimberly Douglass, Carol Tenopir, and Bruce Wilson, along with postdoc Miriam Davis, PhD students Ben Birch and Crystal Sherline, SIS Master’s students Robert Waltz and Tianmu Zhang, and recent PhD recipient Lei Wu attended the NSF-funded DataONE All Hands Meeting this week near Albuquerque, New Mexico.  DataONE is a five-year, $20 million NSF project to build cyber-infrastructure and a culture for sharing and preserving research data related to the earth and environmental sciences.  Along with ORNL, the team is involved in all aspects of the DataONE project. 

Cindy Lancaster, SIS IT specialist/technology coordinator, served on the “Developing and Maintaining Academic Sites” panel at this week’s  Academic Web Presence forum in Lexington, KY.

JOURNALISM AND ELECTRONIC MEDIA

Amber Roessner, assistant professor, had her paper, “Coloring America’s pastime: Sporting Life’s coverage of race & the emergence of baseball’s color line,” published in American Journalism, 28(3): 85-114.

Roessner will present two papers at upcoming conferences. The first paper (co-authored with doctoral student Matthew Broaddus), “The sinners and the scapegoat: Public reaction to Mae West’s Adam & Eve skit in the press,” will be presented at the American Journalism Historian’s Association Annual Convention in Kansas City, MO, Oct. 6-8. The second paper (co-authored with Meeman Professor Jim Stovall), “Another Side of Woman’s Suffrage: The journalistic stances of Sarah Hale, Jane Cunningham Croly, and Ida Tarbell,” will be presented at the Symposium on the Nineteenth Century Press in Chattanooga, TN, November 11-13.

Roessner also recently received an honorable mention in the competition for the American Journalism Historians Association’s 2011 David Sloan Outstanding Faculty Paper Award, and she was honored with a 2011 American Journalism Historians Association’s Joseph McKerns Research Grant Award of $1,250.
