JOURNALISM AND ELECTRONIC MEDIA

Professor Catherine Luther and doctoral students Ivanka Radovic and Ioana Coman presented a paper at the Joint Conference of the International Communication Association (ICA), Group of studies and research on information and communication (GERIICO), and French Society for Information and Communication Sciences (SFSIC) in Lille, France. The paper, “WikiLeaks – Subversion or journalism?: U.S. and French news framing of WikiLeaks and implications on Internet freedom of expression” was formerly presented by Coman.

Professor Sam Swan moderated a panel during the Baker Center’s Mar. 9 program, “Crisis, Coverage, and Communication: Advocacy in a 24/7 News World.”  Panelists include former CNN Anchor Joie Chen and the Poynter Institute’s Al Tompkins.  The topic of the panel is “Cross Training: Journalism for Lawyers, Law for Journalists.”

Swan will join a group of broadcast station managers from Tennessee for the annual Tennessee Association of Broadcasters Call on Congress next Tuesday and Wednesday.  Broadcasters provide information before Congress on key issues affecting broadcast stations.

Students in Swan’s Advanced Television News class are producing both a daily and a weekly newscast airing on WBIR, 10News2, or WBIR Weather Channel.  The daily newscast is a 15-minute program airing at 7 pm Monday thru Friday on WBIR’s weather channel.  The weekly program, UT Today, now in its 19th season on WBIR-TV, airs at noon on Sundays and is repeated at 9:30 pm on Mondays on 10News2.

The Tennessee Association of Broadcasters and the School of Journalism and Electronic Media are sponsoring a Broadcast News Writing Workshop on Saturday, Mar. 10 at the UT Visitor’s Center.  Al Tomkins from the Poynter Center will conduct the workshop.  For more information, contact Swan at samswan@utk.edu.
