Associate Professor Michael Palenchar will present three papers at the May 2012 International Communication Association (ICA) Conference in Phoenix, AZ: “Social media and food safety crises: The potential risks of unconfirmed messages” (with co-author Karen Freberg (PhD/C&I 2011) from the University of Louisville) at the main conference; and “Augmented reality, crisis informatics, and gamifacation practices: Emergence of mobile communication specializations within crisis and risk communication practices” and “Mobile communication, community and locative media practices: From the everyday to the Revolutionary” at the preconference workshop.  

Additionally, Palenchar, along with co-planners Rebecca Meissenbach (University of Missouri) and Sarah Feldner (Marquette University), had their panel, Considering the role of organizations as collective external rhetors, accepted for presentation by the ICA’s Public Relations Division.



In addition to the citations listed in previous editions of Inside CCI this month, the following are from the ALISE (Association for Library and Information Science Education) conference in Dallas, TX:

-Assistant Professor Cindy Welch, presented papers in the following session:  “Telling Our Stories: Extending Our Reach,” “Expanding the Reach of Youth Services:  An Historical Perspective,” and “Inspiring Creativity in the Classroom: The Instructor’s Imperative”

-Assistant Professor Xiaohua (Awa) Zhu, “The Evolution of Access Rights to Digital Legal Information:  A Case Study,” juried paper presentation 

-Associate Professor Suzie Allard and doctoral student Elizabeth Noakes presented their juried paper, “Building Bridges: Teaching Information Science Skills to Leverage the Power of Environmental Information”

– Doctoral candidate Julie Winkelstein and University of Alberta’s Toni Samek presented an interactive mini-class, “Inside the Canadian/American Classroom: Quick Lessons in Expanding Teaching and Learning About Access and Culture.”
