Associate Professor Michael Palenchar and Karen Freberg (Ph.D./C&I 2011), assistant professor at the University of Louisville, published a book chapter entitled “Emergency Management Planning: Risk, Crisis, Issues and Social Media” in Bolanle Olaniran, David Williams, and Timothy Coombs (eds.), Pre-crisis planning, communication, and management: Preparing for the inevitable, (Peter Lang USA).



Chancellor’s Professor and CCI Director of CICS/Director of Research Carol Tenopir is participating in a panel this week on Teaching Online Searching at the annual meeting of the Association of Library and Information Science Education (ALISE). She also presented research results from the Lib-Value project at an Association of Research Libraries preconference at the annual meeting of the American Library Association (ALA). Both meetings are in Dallas.

IT Specialist Cindy Lancaster has been invited to serve on the Drupal IG Fail Panel at the American Library Association (ALA) midwinter conference in Dallas on Jan. 21. 



Professor Rob Heller attended the Poynter Institute seminar “A New Curriculum for a New Journalism” last week in St. Petersburg, Florida. Additionally, a portfolio of Heller’s photographs of Auschwitz appears in the current issue of Visual Communications Quarterly.

Professor Ben Bates presented his paper “Content through clouds and Streams: Implications for media sustainability and regeneration” at the 10th Annual Convergence and Society Conference on Sustainability, Journalism, and Media Regeneration held in Columbia, South Carolina, Oct. 27-28, 2011. Bates, along with Professor Mark Harmon, also presented a paper entitled “Unbundling local news preferences: Measuring value via conjoint analysis” at the Midwest Association for Public Opinion Research conference held in Chicago, Nov. 18-19, 2011.

Bates has two additional forthcoming publications. “Review of R. Armstrong, broadcasting policy in Canada” will appear in the Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media, 55(4), 605-606, and “Passing review: Online research and obtaining human subjects/IRB approvals,” written with Graduate Teaching Associate William Birch, will appear in Handbook of Research on Online Instruments, Data Collection and Electronic Measurements: Organizational Advancements, edited by Mihai Bocarnea and published by IGI Global. 

Bates also will present a paper entitled “Digital media disruption – Removing barriers and lowering thresholds” at the 10th Annual International Conference on Communication and Mass Media to be held in Athens, May 14-17.
