ADVERTISING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS
Assistant Professor Yuliya Lutchyn had her paper “Coordinating Headlines and Consumer Processing Styles in Executing Visual Metaphor Advertisement” published in the Fall 2011 issue of the International Journal of Integrated Marketing Communications. The paper is co-authored with Jun Myers (California State Polytechnic Univ., Pomona), Ronald Faber (Univ. of Minnesota), and Brittany Duff (Univ. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign).
Lutchyn will also present a “Temporal Framing in Health Communication: The Effect of Temporal Distance on Importance of Behavior Antecedents” (co-authored with Marco Yzer from the Univ. of Minnesota) at the May 2012 International Communication Association (ICA) Conference in Phoenix, AZ.

Professor and Director Ed Cortez and doctoral student Rebecca L. Anderson presented their paper, “Social media research methodology: New methods for the LIS researcher’s toolkit,” at the 2012 BOBCATSSS Conference in Amsterdam.

JOURNALISM AND ELECTRONIC MEDIA
Professor Benjamin J. Bates and Lecturer Maria Fontenot have been invited to present their paper, “Will the WIPO Broadcast Rights Treaty Really Create Value for Broadcasters?,” at the 10th World Media Economics and Management Conference, Thessaloniki, Greece, May 2012.
Fontenot, along with Shelley Wigley (Univ. of Texas-Arlington) will present “Breaking News Coverage: A Comparison of Sources used in the Coverage of the Shootings at Virginia Tech and Tucson, Arizona” at the May 2012 International Communication Association (ICA) Conference in Phoeniz, AZ. They also had their paper,” The Giffords shootings in Tucson: Exploring citizen-generated versus news media content in crisis management,” published in Public Relations Review, Nov. 2011 37(4), pp. 337-344.
Fontenot and Chad Harriss (Alfred University) also had an article, “Building a Better PIG: A historical survey of the PMRC and its tactics,” republished in the second edition of Cengage’s textbook Pop Culture Zone: Writing Critically About Pop Culture by Allison D. Smith. The article was originally published in Media, Culture & Society, July 2010, 32(4), pp. 565-580.
Assistant Professor Elizabeth Hendrickson was asked to judge the 2012 National Magazine Awards “Digital Media” category. She will be in New York City Feb. 7th to participate in the judging discussions. Winners will be announced in mid-March. She’s been sworn to secrecy, so don’t even try to get information about the winners from her when she returns to CCI next week.
Assistant Professor Erin Whiteside and co-authors M. Hardin and E. Ash (both of Penn State Univ.), had their paper, “Good for society or good for business? Division I sports information directors’ attitudes toward the commercialization of sport,” published in the 2011 edition of International Journal of Sport Communication, 4, pp. 473-491.
Whiteside and Hardin also had their 2011 paper, “’I don’t feel like I’m up against a wall of men!’ Negotiating difference, identity and the glass ceiling in sports information,” published in the Journal of Intercollegiate Sport 4(2), pp. 210-226.
Additionally, Whiteside presented a co-authored paper, “Fictional empowerment: An examination of sporting narratives in teen girls’ sports novels,” co-authored at the annual meeting of the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport, November 2011, Minneapolis, MN.
