INFORMATION SCIENCES
Professor and Director Ed Cortez, Johannes Britz, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee and Piper Mullins, (SIS/M.S. ‘11) had their paper, “Applying knowledge management strategies to economic development in sub-Saharan Africa,” published in Inkanyiso, Journal of Humanities & Social Sciences, 2011, 3(2).
Cortez, Cindy Romaine (immediate past president of the Special Libraries Association) and Susan Fifer Canby (vice president emeritus of libraries and information services at the National Geographic Society) had their article, “Feeling squeezed by political pressures” published in the January/February 2012 issue of Global Librarianship.
Professor Dania Bilal had her paper, “Ranking, relevance judgment, and precision of information retrieval on children’s queries: Evaluation of Google, Yahoo, Bing, Yahoo Kids, and Ask Kids,” accepted for publication in the Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology.
At the BOBCATSSS conference in Amsterdam, presenters in addition to those previously noted were:
PhD student Crystal Pleake Sherline and Suzie Allard, associate professor, “Using social media to predict upcoming events: A preliminary framework for an applied model”
“Information sharing as a habit of citizenship: Is there an obligation to contribute?” CCI doctoral Student Todd E. Suomela and Suzie Allard
“Potential contributions of social media to the creation of communities of practice among librarians,” CCI doctoral student Monica Colon-Aguirre, Karen Freberg (CCI/PhD ‘11) and Allison Scripa (CCI doctoral student).
At the recent iConference 2012 in Toronto, Canada, Allard was one of five organizers for the highly interactive “alternative event” exploring the role of iSchools in data science called “Brainstorming DataScience@ iSchools”.
Allard also had her article, “DataONE: Facilitating eScience through collaboration” published in the inaugural issue of the new peer reviewed e-journal Journal of eScience Librarianship.

JOURNALISM AND ELECTRONIC MEDIA
Erin Whiteside, JEM assistant professor, is the lead author, along with Marie Hardin (Penn State University) of an article published in the current issue of International Journal of Sports Communication. The piece is entitled “On being a ‘good sport’ in the workplace: Women, the glass ceiling and negotiated resignation in sports information.”
Whiteside’s research was covered by espn.com in a recent article examining the lack of fan base/audience growth in women’s soccer and women’s athletics in general.

CENTER FOR INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION STUDIES
CICS recently submitted several proposals on behalf of CCI faculty. Included among those submissions were: a proposal to the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) by PI Ken Levine (CS) and Co-PIs, Suzie Allard (SIS) and Carol Tenopir (SIS) ; three proposals to the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS): (1) by PI Rachel Fleming-May (SIS); (2) by PI Tenopir and Co-PI Allard, and (3) by PI Fleming-May; and a proposal to the ABMRF/The Foundation of Alcohol Research by PI Roxanne Hovland (ADV/PR) and Co-PI Yuliya Lutchyn (ADV/PR) .
