Internships

Students in the School of Journalism and Electronic Media are required to gain practical professional experience relevant to their degree program. This often takes place in the form of practicums and internships. The School has a number of relationships with local media that provide these opportunities. We also encourage our students to pursue other internship opportunities.

Competitive Internship Opportunities

Students in the School of Journalism and Electronic Media are required to gain practical professional experience relevant to their degree program. Several foundations and firms offer competitive internship opportunities in specialized areas. These often offer students access to larger media and markets. Some offer scholarships or stipends, or the opportunity to also pick up additional course credits, in addition to professional experience.

Public Journalism Internship Initiative sponsored by the Knight Foundation

UTK has begun a program supporting UTK students seeking internships through The Washington Center. Thanks to a generous grant from the Knight Foundation, The Washington Center will now be awarding scholarships to qualified students under the foundation's "Public Journalism Internship Initiative." Eligible students will be interested in public or civic journalism, and come from specific schools (colleges and universities that have licenses for public radio or public television stations). Interns will enroll in TWC's Mass Communications Program and will be placed at one of a set of organizations identified by the Knight Foundation.

Ten $2,000 housing awards are available to students this summer and another ten will be in the fall. During spring, summer, and fall of 2005 there will be 15 $2,000 awards. The students work a full time job, take a high caliber course, attend a series of programs, and earn 12 hours of credit (nine hours during the summer) for their efforts.
