JEM Professor's Play Receives First Staged Reading

Dr. Mark Littman, playwright and Hill Chair of Excellence Professor of Science Writing

JEM Professor Mark Littmann's play, Minding the Heavens, received its first staged reading at the New York Public Library, Oct. 17 2009 in New York City as part of the Inwood Galilean Nights Astronomy Festival.

The four-person play is the true story of Caroline Herschel, one of the most important women in the history of astronomy.  The play follows her life and struggles as she gives up a career in opera to help her brother William Herschel become the greatest astronomer in Europe.  She went on to make breakthroughs in science.  The title refers to how Herschel described her astronomical observations.

The play also had its first partially staged reading here in Knoxville on Oct. 11 as part of the Tennessee Stage Company's New Play Festival.

Littman has produced numerous plays while serving as director of the Hansen Planetarium in Salt Lake City, and some of his shows are still performed worldwide.
